Mortise Lock

Mortise Lock is a type of lock that is installed inside a pocket or "mortise" (a rectangular hole) cut into the edge of a door. These locks are typically used in high-security applications, offering a robust and reliable solution for both residential and commercial doors. Mortise locks are commonly used in wooden doors and metal doors in both modern and traditional settings.

What is a Mortise Lock?

A mortise lock is a mechanical locking system that is embedded within the door itself. The term "mortise" refers to the pocket or recess created inside the door where the lock is fitted. The lock features several components, including:

  • Lock body: The main casing that houses the locking mechanism.

  • Latchbolt: The mechanism that holds the door closed when not locked.

  • Deadbolt: An additional bolt that provides extra security when the lock is engaged.

  • Strike Plate: The metal plate attached to the door frame where the bolt or latch locks into place.

How Does a Mortise Lock Work?

  1. Installation: A mortise lock is installed in a specially cut cavity on the edge of the door.

  2. Locking Mechanism:

    • The latchbolt holds the door shut when not locked.

    • The deadbolt extends into the door frame when the lock is fully engaged for additional security.

  3. Key/Thumb Turn:

    • Keyed Mortise Locks: Operated using a key that locks or unlocks the latch and deadbolt.

    • Thumb Turn Mortise Locks: Can be operated from the inside with a thumb turn or a lever handle.

Types of Mortise Locks

  1. Single-Cylinder Mortise Lock: Features a single keyhole on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside.

  2. Double-Cylinder Mortise Lock: Requires a key on both sides of the door for entry, providing extra security (useful for doors with glass nearby).

  3. Mortise Lock with Deadbolt: Offers a deadbolt in addition to the regular latchbolt, providing enhanced security.

  4. Mortise Lock with Handle: Some models include a handle for easier opening and closing.
